The short version

We do not physically test every product we cover. Most of our reviews are built by aggregating and cross-referencing verified owner data, retailer return-rate signals, long-term ownership reports, and hands-on testing from sources we trust, then weighing all of it against price history and direct competitors. When we do run a product through hands-on testing ourselves, we say so explicitly at the top of the review. When we don’t, we say that too. This page explains exactly how each type of review gets built so you know what you’re reading before you act on it.

Why We’re Telling You This

Most review sites imply every product on their site has been personally tested by someone on staff. For a handful of products, maybe ten units in a category, that’s realistic. For a site covering everything from document scanners to underwater drones to commercial refrigeration, it isn’t. Anyone claiming otherwise at that scale is either lying or running a much bigger testing lab than any consumer review site actually has.

We’d rather tell you how the sausage gets made than pretend we hand-tested a robot lawn mower we didn’t. Trust on this site is supposed to come from accuracy and transparency, not from a vague “our experts tested this” line with nobody’s name attached to it.

Two Types of Reviews, Clearly Labeled

Every review on Price Review HQ falls into one of two categories, and we mark which one it is at the top of the page.

Hands-On Reviews

For a smaller set of products, usually ones with high search demand or where owner data is contradictory enough that we need a tiebreaker, we buy the product at retail price and test it ourselves. These reviews carry a “Hands-On Tested” label and include specifics: how long we used it, under what conditions, and what broke or didn’t.

Aggregated Reviews

For most products on the site, we build the review from existing data rather than buying and testing the unit ourselves. These carry an “Aggregated Review” label. This is not a lesser form of research when done correctly; in some ways it’s more reliable than one staffer’s experience with one unit, because it pulls from hundreds or thousands of ownership experiences instead of a single test period. The risk with aggregation is sloppiness, so here’s exactly how we control for that.

What Goes Into an Aggregated Review

A product needs corroboration across at least two of these source types before we’ll make a specific factual claim about it (a stated battery life, a noise level, a failure rate). If we can’t corroborate something, we either leave it out or say plainly that the figure is single-sourced and unconfirmed.

The Five-Part Framework

Regardless of which type of review it is, every product goes through the same five checks before we publish a verdict.

1. Performance Against Primary Use Case

We’re not testing for edge cases. We’re asking whether the product does the thing most buyers are buying it to do, under normal conditions. A robot lawn mower review is judged on whether it cuts a typical suburban lawn reliably, not on how it handles a half-acre of dense brush nobody in our audience has.

2. Price History Analysis

We track listed price against historical price across major retailers. A product currently priced at $89 that has spent most of the last year at $59 gets flagged as overpriced at $89, regardless of how good the product itself is. This part of the framework is the most purely data-driven, since it’s tracking numbers over time rather than synthesizing opinions.

3. Competitor Comparison

Every review names what else exists at the same price point and states plainly whether the differences are real quality gaps or mostly brand premium. We will tell you when the cheaper option does the same job.

4. Long-Term Reliability Signals

This is where aggregation does its heaviest lifting. A product can look great in week one and fail constantly by month eight; a one-week hands-on test from any outlet, including us, would miss that entirely. We specifically weight verified owner data from the 6-month and 2-year mark to catch durability problems that early reviews structurally cannot see.

5. Value Verdict

Buy, wait for a sale, or skip. Stated plainly, not buried at the end of three thousand words.

What We Don’t Do

We don’t state a specific performance number (battery life, noise level, load rating) without at least one corroborating source. We don’t label something “Hands-On Tested” unless we physically bought and used it. We don’t treat unverified reviews the same as verified-purchase reviews. We don’t let a manufacturer’s marketing claim stand in as a tested figure.

How Often Reviews Get Updated

Aggregated reviews are revisited when enough new owner data accumulates to shift a verdict, typically as a product passes the six-month and two-year ownership marks where reliability problems tend to surface. Price information is checked on a rolling basis, since it changes far more often than build quality does. The publish date and last-updated date are shown at the top of every review; if you’re reading something more than a few months old, check that date before assuming the price section is still current.
